Hi my name is Mary Hardy. Welcome to my art website.
I am particularly interested in installation and sculpture. My fascinations with imagination and the uncanny is intertwined in a lot of my work. From latex showers to beds made out of books I have created the familiar yet unfamiliar.
My Honours Project considers writings by Gaston Bachelard and Susan Stewart to unpick my thesis question ‘Four walls, four corners and the space between: an interrogation of elements of the domestic space as a site for the developing intimate space.’ I am strongly interested in ‘the box’ as object, small scale objects, working monochromatically, video, drawing, research, documentation and carefully considering presentation. Concerns with space, containment, constraint, fragility and the interests in toys, memory and narratives have influenced the objects that I make.
I am a prolific maker. I work best when I physically engage in the process and work on a few different ideas at the same time. This quote specifically applies to the methodology of my work: “I have no innate ability for doing things physically, so I have to really learn and try to do it, and for me that’s the pleasure in it” - Kiki Smith
